Dow Polyurethanes, a business unit of Dow Corporation, is headquartered in Midland, Michigan. It is a supplier of raw materials for polyurethane foam production. It has opened a mattress recycling business in France as part of Dow's Renuva polyol program.

The Renuva mattress recycling plant and the chemical company Orrion Chemicals Orgaform operate in cooperation with the latter's large manufacturing base in Semoy, France. Dow’s other French partner in this project is Eco-Mobilier, which has collected more than 3 million tons of old furniture in France for recycling or reuse since 2011. The new factory can process up to 200,000 mattresses per year to solve the growing problem of mattress waste in France.

"This is indeed the first time for our company and France," said Christian Siest, President of Orrion Chemicals. "We have been committed to creating more sustainable solutions for a long time, and recognized the industry's need to be part of the solution early on. Our factory uses a chemical recycling process in which polyurethane foam is decomposed and transformed into a novel single Products. The benefit of this is versatility. We can handle foam from any mattress, and the Renuva polyol formula itself can be customized for different applications."

The foam supplier Vita Group, located in Middleton, UK, is the first customer of the new Renuva polyols, using them to make sustainable Orbis flexible foams for mattresses and bedding.

"We are extremely proud of the opening of this factory," said Marie Buy, head of sustainability at Dow Polyurethanes. "By doing so, we are answering the question of what can be done with recycled polyurethane foam. This is part of Dow’s firm commitment to provide solutions that help close the cycle and protect our environment. We are actively exploring the future of recycled materials and potential applications. Possibility. This is really a new beginning."

Dow introduced the Renuva series of polyols more than ten years ago as a more sustainable alternative by using natural oil polyols, especially soybean oil. The company said that the latest Renuva polyol extracted from foam recovered and reprocessed from old bedding is the first step in creating a circular economy for polyurethane.
