Boots are a winter wardrobe staple that'll be worn day in, day out, so we expect a lot from a pair before we'll invest.

Comfort is key, but it's not only our feet that need warming – we also want to bask in the glow of knowing that our boots are sustainably made.

We've scoured the internet for brands which are taking steps to be more sustainable, by reducing the negative environmental impact from the production of their shoes.

Scroll down for our picks of the best sustainable boots for women and men this winter.

(Lots of these brands carry both men's and women's sizes, so do click through to explore their whole collections too).

Holly Willoughby is a fan of this heritage British brand's chunky lace up Nanette boots and we're pleased to report that the lace-up style can also be bought in a vegan-friendly leather alternative. The upper is made from microfibre, which can be recycled, plus it is breathable, antibacterial, washable and (importantly) lightweight. Grenson's shoes are designed to be easily repairable, so you can expect them to last you a fair few years.

Not only are these sturdy walking boots vegan-friendly, they're also 98% virgin plastic free. The nylon upper is made from repurposed marine plastic, while the sole is made with natural rubber (45% of which is recycled). Comfortable and water-resistant, one happy shopper commented in a review that she's "never taking them off". "These boots are some of the best boots i’ve ever owned," she continued. "They are so comfortable, made impeccably, and look really good. Really happy to own them."

These Chelsea boots strike just the right balance between sleek and tough, with a statement chunky rubber sole. Designed as part of Net-A-Porter's curated Net Sustain collection, they are made from supple leather produced in Leather Working Group medaled tanneries - which means the tanneries are audited yearly to access whether they meet standards of good environmental practice.

These classic evening boots, with a thick 9cm block heel and curved toe, are handmade in Spain from vegan faux suede. The lining is made from 100% recycled faux leather and they earn extra Brownie points as the packaging is also completely recyclable.

Both Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton are fans of French brand Veja's low top styles, but for the winter we recommend switching to a pair of these high tops, which are made from a vegan alternative to leather: organic cotton coated with resin from corn and castor oil. Veja has also been praised as a brand for its transparency, use of organic materials and fair trade sourcing.

Lots of vegan shoes are made from plastic - but not these high tops. Yatay's shoes are handmade in Italy using eco-friendly products (bio-polyols, polymers extracted from cereals and corn, wood, rubber, and recycled plastic). This style is also available in an array of pleasingly bright colours - but sizes are limited on these.

Smart enough for the office but also waterproof and hardwearing, these boots will be your staples all winter. They are are made with nubuck Better Leather from a sustainable tannery rated Silver by the Leather Working Group for its water, energy and waste management practices. Plus, the lining is made with at least 50% recycled plastic bottles and the rubber soles are partly-recycled.

Grenson aims to be the opposite of throwaway fashion, with boots designed to last a lifetime and with the option to have them repaired should they need a bit of TLC. Featuring oversized brogue punching, big eyelets and a chunky sole, these boots are completely-free of any animal products. The upper is made from microfibre that mimics cowhide, while the insoles are a hard-wearing, absorbent board that is made from paper and can be recycled.

"Wool boots? In winter?" We hear you ask. But we promise you these aren't going to end up like soggy socks after a downpour. Oh no, the ethically-sourced wool upper is treated with a fluorine-free water repellent coating. Every inch of these shoes has been designed with sustainability in mind, even the laces are made from a recycled plastic bottle, and if that's not enough green credentials for you, these shoes are also carbon neutral thanks to Allbirds' sustainable practices, (using natural materials and buying offsets).

Made from from 100% leather-free, vegan, recycled materials, these durable water-resistant walking boots feature wide, thin and flexible soles, designed to promote your foot's natural movement. These boots were not only made for walking, (if you'll pardon the pun) but were also designed to be remade and reworn. When you are finished with them visit revivo.com to find out how to keep them out of landfill.

RIGA (Reuters) -The centre-right New Unity party of Latvian Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins was set to win Saturday's national election, an exit poll showed, after a campaign dominated by security concerns following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. If confirmed, the result should mean Latvia remains a leading voice alongside its Baltic neighbours Lithuania and Estonia in pushing the European Union for a decisive stance against Russia. But it could widen a rift between the country's Latvian majority and its Russian-speaking minority over their place in society, amid widespread national anger over Moscow's actions in Ukraine.

The writer suing Donald Trump for defamation after he denied having raped her in the mid-1990s accused the former U.S. president of stonewalling and trying to avoid a scheduled deposition as he tries to delay the case indefinitely. In a letter filed on Friday in federal court in Manhattan, a lawyer for E. Jean Carroll also said Trump was "mistaken" in arguing that the lawsuit should be dismissed altogether because the U.S. government, and not he, was the proper defendant. Trump sought to put Carroll's case on hold on Wednesday, after the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan left it to a Washington, D.C., appeals court to decide whether Trump acted as president when he branded Carroll a liar in 2019.

BERLIN (AP) — Borussia Dortmund failed to capitalize on Bundesliga leader Union Berlin’s first loss when it conceded a one-goal lead and lost to Cologne 3-2 on Saturday. Eintracht Frankfurt defeated Union 2-0 at home, ending the last unbeaten team’s record in the league, though Urs Fischer’s side remained top for the third round straight – on goal difference ahead of Freiburg. Freiburg enjoyed a 2-1 win at home over Mainz to consolidate its great start after eight rounds. Instead of going top, D

TALLINN, Estonia (AP) — Fewer Russians have crossed into neighbouring countries in recent days, according to local authorities, despite persistent anxiety over the partial mobilization the Kremlin launched less than two weeks ago to bolster its forces fighting in Ukraine. The mass exodus of Russian men — alone or with their families or friends — began Sept. 21, shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the partial call-up of reservists. In Russia, the vast majority of men under ag

HALIFAX — The impact of post-tropical storm Fiona on Atlantic Canada's fishing industry is still being tallied, but Osborne Burke already knows just how bad it could be. Burke, general manager of Victoria Co-operative Fisheries in Neils Harbour, N.S., says it will cost up to $2 million to repair the high-tech seafood processing operation, which was torn open by hurricane-force winds and a destructive storm surge last Saturday. "We have major damage," he said in an interview Friday, adding that n

WASHINGTON (AP) — Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson said Friday she has “a seat at the table now and I’m ready to work,” leaning into her history-making role as the first Black woman on the Supreme Court. Jackson spoke at the Library of Congress several hours after she made her first appearance on the Supreme Court bench in a brief ceremony that was attended by President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and their spouses. “People from all walks of life approach me with what I can only describ

EDMONTON — After years of negotiations, the Alberta government signed an agreement Friday with a First Nations group committing to return an ancient meteorite to its historic location after being displaced for over 150 years. Manitou Asinîy, also known as the Creator's Stone or Manitou Stone, is a 145-kilogram iron meteorite that landed close to the Alberta-Saskatchewan boundary, near modern-day Hardisty, Alta., billions of years ago. The chestnut-coloured stone weighs about the same as a red-ta

Being jilted at the altar is every bride's worst nightmare. But in the case of Andrea Lech-Cormier, it wasn't her husband who failed to show up. It was their wedding officiant. Less than 24 hours before "I do's" were said, the officiant, who Cormier had hired through a Facebook group, failed to show up at the rehearsal dinner. Cormier said she paid a deposit to the officiant, who said she'd be at the rehearsal the day before the nuptials. "[At the rehearsal], we were all waiting for her to come
